Interstellar(2014)

Updated: Jul 25, 2021

“Murphy’s Law doesn’t mean that something bad will happen. It means that whatever can happen, will happen.”

Christopher Nolan’s 2014, space epic, Interstellar, is arguably his best sci-fi film, alongside his other 2014 movie, Transcendence, and of course his 2010 release of Inception.

This movie focuses on the inevitable future of our life on Earth, when entirety of mankind is threatened by the lack of resources on this planet, and scientists have to come up with possible solutions to prevent the extinction of humans. The movie, set some time in the middle of the 21st Century, is the story of how a group of people have to go on a mission into a wormhole, to scout for possible alternative planets where mankind could thrive. Cooper, a trained NASA scientist, played by Matthew McConaughey, has to leave his two children behind and leave for this mission.

As a movie, in this sort of genre, it focuses less on the theoretical and probability aspects, but rather the stress is put on the harsh realities that are encountered throughout the movie. Unlike most other sci-fi films, this movie provides a dramatic balance between the emotions and the science of it all, and makes sure that any viewer always remains connected with the story. Watching this film, you will often feel that, the want for these people on the mission to find something to save humanity, runs almost parallel with their want to just go back home and see their families. Like most science-fiction movies, the amazing graphical display with Academy Award winning composer, Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack only makes you fall deeper into this film. Almost each scene in the later part of the movie are beautifully color coded, which helps make out the stark differences in each of the different settings in the movie. Of course, mention has to be made of the brilliant acting display by Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway(one of Coopers partners on the mission) on the leads. But truly the entire essence of the movie was carried by its gripping storyline, which often overshadows the performances of the actors. I believe it is the nature of science-fiction in itself to help people aspire and dream of possibilities that have never been thought of before. Interstellar perfectly demonstrates such a perspective that makes viewers think about the future, mankind’s future and how we should look to make sure that that we as human beings and all other organisms thrive, by preserving our home.

Watching this movie for the first time, nearly six years ago, as a ten year old, exploded my childish brain with its feeling of adventure and search for salvation which goes hand-in-hand with trying to understand all that is unknown in this vast reality of ours.
