HIGGS FIELD

Updated: Jul 25, 2021

INTRODUCTION

The Standard Model of particle physics explains three of the four basic forces of nature, electromagnetic, weak and strong forces. It does not take into focus the gravitational force. It is made of mainly elementary fermions and elementary bosons. The theory was generally considered self-sufficient except for one unique particle. THE HIGGS BOSON. The Higgs Boson was theorized by Peter Higgs and five other scientists in 1964 and was only confirmed tentatively in 2012 in CERN Switzerland. What then is this particle?

THE NEED FOR A NEW FIELD

All the equations of the “Unified field theory” describe the electroweak force of the W and Z bosons correctly except for a “tiny” issue. All particles are not supposed to have any MASS. Now, for years scientists were dumbfounded by this issue in order to be able to complete the theory of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. This is where it gets complicated so read this carefully. A mechanism was derived by these 6 scientists, which gives the W and Z bosons when they interact with an invisible field that pervades the Universe. This field is called the HIGGS FIELD.This mechanism introduced a new quantum field whose quantum manifestation was the HIGGS BOSON.

THE UNIQUENESS OF HIGGS BOSON

Why is the Higgs Boson so talked about?

It is the only elementary scalar particle to be observed by Mankind EVER. The mechanism developed was such that would break the electroweak symmetry. Only the particles that would interact with the Higgs field would acquire Mass. This essentially means that The Higgs Field is EVERYWHERE. Obviously, we can't see it but it's there. This is the uniqueness of the Higgs Field and the Higgs Boson.

CONCLUSION: HIGGS FIELD

The Standard Model of Particle Physics would not have been complete without the Higgs Field. The Higgs Field was a theory of masterful genius by the 6 scientists who made it. The Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013 was given to Peter Higgs and Francois Englert for this theory. The Higgs Field bears a testament to the amazing depth of THEORETICAL PHYSICS.
